Even though he is a part of one of the most influential
political families in Philippine political history, it would surprise most
people --- especially registered voters --- that Jack Enrile, during his young days, never wanted to enter the
political arena. If truth be told, he wanted to stay as far away from politics
as possible, which meant moving away from the looming shadow of his father, the
current Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile Sr. This is one of the main reasons
Jack decided to pursue his studies abroad, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
English from Christian Heritage College as well as a Presidential Master’s
Degree in Business Administration from the University of Pepperdine. Right
after the returned to the Philippines,
he became the chief executive and president of one of the biggest corporations
in the country, namely the JAKA Family Investments Corporation. From then on,
it seemed that business was the road that Jack was going to take for the rest
of his life. However, in 1998, in order to pursue more fully his personal
advocacies, he decided to run and was eventually elected as the congressman of
the First District of the Province of Cagayan --- a position he faithfully served
from the years 1998-2001, 2001-2004, 2004-2007, and 2010-2013. Consequently,
Jack embraced politics and gradually became closer to his father Juan Ponce
Enrile Sr. This relationship has served Jack well as he now takes the next step
in his political career, as he runs for a Philippines senator in this year’s 2013 elections.
According to the latest survey, even though he has dropped a
few spots, Jack Enrile remains one
of the top twelve most popular senatorial candidates among registered voters.
This is because of his coauthoring and championing of two of the most working
class-friendly bills, the “Food Requirement Plan for Filipinos” and the “Batas
Kasambahay” bill. The former seeks to allocate the greater part of the nation’s
food supply to Filipinos all around the country, meeting their obligatory food
needs; it also de-prioritizes the exportation of our national food supply to
international markets. The latter bill, which was implemented last December
2012, ensures better welfare and working conditions for tens of thousands of
household helpers working around the Philippines. Thus, working-class
voters, which make up the majority of the Philippine population, are putting
their trust on a Philippines senator candidate who is looking out
for their needs. The 2013 elections might
be the time for Enrile Jr. to take center stage in Philippine politics.
